At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses their correspondence, James's last visit, which lacked in amusements because of David's "disagreeable employment," and his son. Notes receiving a letter from William Robertson in Madras, India, and discusses the death of Lord Pigot in captivity in 1777 and the trial of those responsible for his arrest.
