At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Chastises James for not writing. Gives him information about her son to be passed on to her mother-in-law. Describing the acerbic early part of the letter, she notes that she "commenced this Epistle with all the inveteray [sic] of a Paper War." Notes that her husband David has already "sent you all the News about Our dear Willm," referring to the birth of their son.
