Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brigadier General Glover signs on verso, attesting to the validity of this document. Job Alvord and Elihu Lyman, captain and lieutenant of the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment, sign on verso. Also signed by D. Green. Appears to be torn, as some text is missing from the left margin. Includes a list of privates, drum and fife and contains a reference (partial text loss obscures the phrase) to Peekskill, New York.
