At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brigadier General Kershaw informs McIntosh, Assistant Adjutant General, that he assumed command of the Brick House Creek line of defenses, Colonel Cash's (possibly Ellerbee B. C. Cash) 8th South Carolina Regiment, and Captain Kemper's (possibly James L. Kemper) Battery of Light Artillery the previous day. Written from Greens Farm, possibly in Virginia.
