General Holmes writes to his nephew. Requests information regarding Broadfoot's situation, the condition of his troops, and the enemy in his vicinity. Remarks that Corporal Hinsdale is going to meet Holmes' wife, "and the girls will not be back before thursday I am particularly anxious to hear if you have any reason to expect a raid..." Offers to send Armistead (Colonel Franck S. Armistead), if Broadfoot needs reinforcement. Has been anxious about Broadfoot's health. Written on Headquarters Reserve, North Carolina stationery.
