At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Forwarding Lee's orders and stating the importance of defending Richmond. Forwards "instructions from Genl Lee for your guidance they are vague enough." Says focus should be on "guarding the obstructions" moreso than the roads. States "The duty then is plain, it is simply to prevent the Yankees from gaining the 'gate' to Richmond." Hill was located near Richmond at the time as well. Written during the Peninsula Campaign, shortly before the Seven Days.
