Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gregg, Colonel of the 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers, instructs Thomas (possibly at the Citadel) to immediately furnish 800 musket cartridges. Also forwards a letter from Captain Gadberry (possibly James M. Gadberry), applying for 5 muskets from the Citadel to complete the equipment of his company (letter not included).
