At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General McClernand writes from headquarters, reserves of the Army of the Tennessee, in the field. Transmits a newspaper from Mobile (not present). Informs Grant, second-in-command, Department of the Mississippi, to pay particular attention to the remarks of Colonel Richards, commander of a detachment from the 1st Division of the reserves (Richards has written notes in pencil on the newspaper's margin). Discusses Richards's notes, which pertain to Confederate camp location. One bust engraving of McClernand included as collateral.
