Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The corporation is also referred to as the "first Maine Turnpike Corporation." Contains the following copied signature of John C. Jones (Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives), David Cobb (President of the Massachusetts Senate), and Caleb Strong (Governor of Massachusetts). John Avery signs as Massachusetts Secretary of State. Henry Knox is a member of the corporation. Location inferred.
