Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in Knox's hand. List of expenses for the recruiting service. Goods and services include clothing, transportation, bounties, rations, medicine and pay to recruiters. Tens of thousands of dollars was allocated and spent. Page 4 has a reference to the "Indian department." Line items for the "Creek" and Cherokee" add up to $8,000 and a line item for "Indians N West Ohio" is $10,000.
