At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Beaumez relates his troubles for "being borne in France," as the government general in Calcutta wants him to return to America. Beaumez talks about the dangers he faces should he be captured by a French ship. He says that his reputation has allowed him to get an extension to stay for six months.
