Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Winslow tells Knox of the difficult time he had surveying Penobscot due to difficult woodland and stormy weather. Winslow is trying to secure payment from buyers, "Messrs Merril and Brackett," who are awaiting a survey of the area. The don't want to make a payment until they have a deed.
