At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes Nicholson regarding "the circumstance of Mr. Russel and Mr. Amory" who left his ship (the Constitution) because they did not receive commissions. Knox has told them to return and be obedient, but also suggests to Nicholson that once they are all far out at sea to give them their commissions "in a handsome manner." It will surely boost Nicholson's reputation in town.
