At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he hopes she will write as frequently as possible, as he does not believe his family will be able to leave India until "next season." Encourages her to write despite the distance and the time it will take for her letters to arrive. Adds that their ship was one of the last that sailed the previous spring, so he does not expect to have news from the United States soon, especially regarding the health of the family. Relates several anecdotes about his experiences in India, such as mistaking an ornately decorated tavern for the palace of the Governor General.
