At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses business arrangements he is making with General [David] Cobb. Mentions the difficulties facing the Bank of the United States, as well as those who have to repay the bank money they owe. Comments on a variety of business matters, including a bank note owed by Colonel [Samuel] Hodgdon and negotiations with Mr. [possibly Alexander] Baring.
