At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Another note to Mr. Varlé concerning Varlé's conduct towards one of Knox's daughters. Writes that Mr. Varlé was hired to help with Knox's canal project and as such has "no business at my house and of consequence are not to come there." Possibly refers to Peter Charles Varlé, an engineer and geographer who drew maps.
