At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses a journey (possibly a permanent move?) she will soon be taking with her brother (likely Henry Knox, her brother-in-law). Mentions she is worried about leaving her children behind. Appears to be discussing a problem or difficulty that Lucy Knox is going through. Speaks of the various parties that have taken place. The day was added later in pencil. Letter appears to be missing the last page or pages.
