At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Knox the trees arrived from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New York, New York and they, along with the gardener, are on a vessel heading towards St. George's [House] in Maine. Inquires about an invoice and if he should pay it. Mentions some of the trees and grapevines may not survive. Also, gives a listing of the different kinds of fruit and vegetables seeds that are being planted in Knox's garden.
