At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Knox that he has another daughter and that his wife Lucy is doing well. Writes that "the little Stranger is truly the largest - and finest Child I ever saw - and is already much endeared to us all and the alarm she occasioned last night - has proved her value."
