Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addressed to "Gentlemen." Outlines an arrangement by which Madame de Leval's and Mr. Jean-Baptiste de la Roche's countrymen from France could settle Knox's lands in the Waldo patent in Maine. Describes the steps they took in their negotiation, and the resolutions at which they arrived. Provides a detailed account of the townships in question and their prices. A note next to the signatures at the end mentions that the document was translated from the French.
