At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he met Colonel Smith [William Stephens Smith] at the Post Office, who informed him that he would be going to Philadelphia to see Knox within the course of a month. Discusses payment of a bill of Knox's brother William; Randall will apparently take the money and pay it off to Colonel Smith. Mentions several other business concerns. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
