At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks for Knox's assistance, complaining that "the world has severely frowned upon me, and has left me, nearly as wretched, as the Human mind can conceive." Asks to have an interview with Knox so that he can explain his situation more fully. States that mutual acquaintances will give him recommendations.
