At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks for permission to continue burning lime in a kiln he built, apparently on land he bought from Thomas Flucker, Knox's father-in-law. Writes, "I am gratly regoyst to hear your honer thinkes of coming to live amonst us which I beleve will be much for your entrest and a grat blesen to the inhabitants... i have don the best i cold to rase the credit of your Lime..."
