At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes, "I arrived at this place on my way to West Point but the ice has prevented me from proceeding any further and I am obligated to return to Carolina immediately which makes it necessary for me to go to Newark immediately. The brave I have entrusted with a letter to my Father and take the liberty of requesting your aid to assist him in passing the river, which request your goodness will pardon me for." Sends his regards to Mrs. Knox.
