At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Comments about how she should be thankful to God at Christmas for living another year. Discusses her need for a thick shawl. Also comments on the death of Christian Taopi. Notes her receipt of Shiras's photo, and her want of a similar one of herself, in a post script.
