At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Depicts the missions and Indian agencies along about fifty miles of the Missouri River west of Sioux City. Hemans discusses making the map for Frances Shiras to answer her question about the spatial relationship between the Santee, Yankton, and Ponca agencies in GLC02429.04. GLC02429.03 appears to be a draft of the map.
