At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks the recipient for information in a previous letter, about the "hostile disposition of the Indians on the Frontiers." Shares his hope that federal treaties will ease the recipient's apprehensions and "produce a general peace." Introduces Col. Proctor, Mr. Boone and Mr. Linklain, who have brought the present letter on their trip to the "interior counties," and asks the recipient to help and accommodate them if possible.
