At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Murray writes to his wife: "Dear Lile I almost dread when we are discharged it will Be almost like changing climate, the mode of living is so diferent, But I think I can manage..." Has been temporarily marked "off duty" by the doctor. Hopes to keep a blanket he found on the battlefield at Gettysburg. Disapproves of women who marry soldiers, and notes how the soldiers pass judgment when they see "a soldier run with a girl."
