At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that the 58th Pennsylvania, along with other regiments, left camp and garrison equipage in camp upon being ordered to march to Norfolk. Explains that when the equipage was delivered to the regiments at Norfolk, many of the articles were not recovered by their owners. Written at Camp Suffolk.
