Apologizes for not writing sooner but his loss of sight made writing very difficult and his life very miserable. He enquires about the well-being of his "dear Cousin," reports that Mag has been sick with "cold pains in all her limbs" [symptoms of malaria] and the prospects for leaving New Orleans for Alabama on the advice of their doctor who claims that a "change of air" will cure "Mag's" malaria.
