At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He introduces himself and sends a French cockade as a gift. He acknowledges that she honors people who make noble struggles for liberty. The address is partially missing, it looks like a corner of the page was torn out. The letter was written on September 21, though 1789 as the year is inferred.
