Roosevelt thanks him for his letter and writes, "I have received your letter in reference to the friars; and as it evidently proceeds from an entire misunderstanding of the facts, I take pleasure in reciting them to you." Fox was a member of the Holy Name Society, Church of St. Catherine of Siena, New York, who in mid July had sent resolutions of his society to Roosevelt protesting the banishment of friars from the Philippines. Roosevelt notes that the friars were removed by the Philippine people, not the United States government, and the government of the United States is acting benevolently in involving itself in the sale of the lands formerly in the possession of the friars. Aguinaldo would have just seized the lands. Letter written as President of the United States on White House stationery.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
