At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The recipient was probably Micah Brooks. Explains that the government will not be able to grant the request of the Selectmen of Belfast to send troops to expel the British from Fort Castine on the Penobscot Bay, which they recently came to occupy. He does not think it wise to keep troops in Belfast, Maine, where the former defenders of Castine will go if no reinforcements are forthcoming.
