At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The State of Connecticut pays Alling for delivering two expresses, one to Guilford, and the other to Wallingford. Lieutenant Colonel Hezekiah Sabin signs, certifying Alling's receipt. Samuel [Hamilton?] signs at Hartford 1 December 1779, confirming payment to Alling. Caleb Beecher signs at New Haven 13 October 1779 on verso, acknowledging Alling's receipt of the sum.
