At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Muster roll for of Captain Lemuel Clap's company in the Massachusetts Guard. Lists name, rank, and enlistment date of men in the regiment. Almost all the men enlisted 11 August, though some later. A third of the men in the company are named Clap. Andrew Brown signs as Commishioner of Musters. Captain Lemuel Clap and Lieutenant Aaron Bird swear to the document by signing. Signed before John Avery, who signs as justice of the peace. Also a list by rank of the number of men present and absent. Written in Dorchester, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts.
