At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter written by Brownard from the Quartermaster General's office to Colonel Biddle as Deputy Quartermaster General of Pennsylvania. Says "The General" requests Biddle to provide pasture for the expresses - probably horses for the express riders - where they can be in one place as near to his office as possible.
