At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Petition stating that Leland was discharged from Lord Blakeney's regiment and recommended to the British Royal Bounty of Chelsea, but was taken prisoner by the enemy. He was a prisoner in Port au Prince, Haiti for 7 months, and then was sent home by Governor Moore in Jamaica by ship. He did duty as a marine for 4 months. Requests his pay. Lord Blakeney possibly refers to Baron William Blakeney, lieutenant-governor and lieutenant-general of Minorca in 1747.
