At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States he had hoped he could give an account of British General Charles Cornwallis, but they must wait before judging whether or not he will fail in his retreat. Remarks that Benedict Arnold is still safe. He will write again next Thursday and forward any intelligence that arrives before then.
