Shelden thanks Holten for everything he has done for him and states he will always esteem him as a friend, father, and benefactor. He regrets he did not become a master of his field of learning but knows that with Holten's assistance he will distinguish himself. Holten was possibly his mentor. He states he was distressed at leaving Holten when he was unwell. He describes his trip to Danvers and wagon troubles along the way, making the trip take 21 days. He thanks him profusely for his hospitality when he stayed with Holten and praises Mrs. Holten and "the two young ladies." He states that everyone in Danvers is asking when "the doctor" is coming back and says he will be received with joy. He proposes leaving for Philadelphia on 1 July if he can buy a good horse.
