At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

British document concerning the construction of these two forts. States that expenditures are for Fort Penobscot from 1 May 1779 to 24 January 1784 and at Halifax from 1 January 1783 to 31 July 1783. Hartcup was Commanding Engineer. Fort Penobscot was occupied by British forces 1779-1783. It is now known as Fort George. It was the last post to be surrendered by the British at the end of the Revolutionary war.
