At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Details the Lovett family accounts. Most are lists of sundry goods brought to Lovett by ship and their costs. Mentions the names of many ships, their sailing dates, and their captains. Includes a mention of pistols and cannons shipped. Also includes a bet he placed in a pub regarding the coming route of all British soldiers from America. These pages are marked. Lovett was a privateer ship merchant and captain in Beverly, Massachusetts.
