At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thomas Smith writes in detail about accounts to be collected (while he is on the judicial circuit) interspersed with family news. He comments on Revolutionary War certificates: "I think I can make more by buying Certificates while they continue so low at present...for I am buying only to sell again." There are some notes on page 2.
