Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lay was served in the 40th Regiment, Ill. volunteers. Collection includes 64 items including 32 letters, 25 envelopes, 2 metal lapel pins, and 5 miscellaneous items. Letters include many original envelopes, some with patriotic designs, a cut-out valentine to his wife Sarah Lay, and a steamboat pass for her to meet him at Memphis. Also includes correspondence from other family members, such as Sarah's sister Marget.
