Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

List of 127 prisoners transferred to Fortress Monroe, Virginia under Major General John Dix: 116 crewmen from the captured CSS ironclad "Atlanta" and 11 prisoners taken near Savannah, Georgia. Signed on page 3 by Provost Marshal Captain W. E. Blake of Fortress Monroe and by W.J. Greenway. Written aboard the USS "James Adger".
