At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One future signer of the U.S. Constitution to another. Brearly (also: "Brearley"), writing as Chief Justice of New Jersey, sends Dayton, then a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, a scale (not included) determined by the New Jersey legislature "for making compensation to the Troops for the depreciation of their pay." Docketed by Dayton on otherwise blank integral leaf.
