At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by H. L. Scott. Docket reads "General Orders, No. 293, Sept. 20th 1847, Sergeant and Corporals who distinguis [sic] themselves in action. Commanders to make report on the subject." Republishes section 17 of an act of Congress (3 March 1847) stating that any non-commissioned officer who distinguishes himself during a tour of duty will have attached to him by brevet the lowest grade of rank along with an increase in pay.
