At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Updates on the siege of Vicksburg, the Copperheads' Peace Meeting at Springfield, "Glorious Intelligence" from Port Hudson, Lee moving into Pennsylvania. With notices of battle deaths, wounding of citizens (men and women) by shells, and an obituary for Col. Eugene Erwin. Printed on blue, green, and dark red wallpaper. Stamp of Tennessee Historical Society on recto and verso. Printed during the siege, while Vicksburg was under bombardment.
