At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in response to a request for an autographed letter written by his son, Ulysses S. Grant. He writes, "I have no letter from him written for such a purpose..." He also gives a brief history of the family and states concerning his son, "...it affords me some satisfaction think that I have reared a boy that has rendered a little assistance to Father Abraham in finishing his "big job."" Written on lined paper.
