At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Book lists soldiers who died in New York State Soldiers' Depot. Entries on first thirteen pages include possessions for the deceased. These entries list name of deceased, their unit and residence, any effects they had, and whom these effects were given to. Some entries also include notes. Most soldiers left clothing and cash, generally sent to their families. The remainder of the book lists chronologically those that died in the hospital. This section begins "The N.Y.S. Soldiers Depot for Reception of Soldiers 20th May, 1863. The first case received in hospital was on that date...Was closed April 1st 1866...Total number to this date 6915." This second list includes name, unit, cause and date of death, and notes regarding the patient. Some notes written in purple ink. One note reads "This was the first colored man brought into the Hospital, he having been refused admission to New England Rooms." A total of one hundred eleven men died. Last page states the hospital dressed 24,659 wounds.
