At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He continues to talk of the possibility of having to remain in service. He reiterates that he is tired of the service. Includes general orders No. 146, dated Sept. 30th, 1862 which says "no officer will hereafter be relieved of his command and sent to report in this city without the authority of the War department."
